8 Questions to Ask Before Starting Therapy

A practical guide for noticing fit, clarity, and whether a therapist can meet what you need

AA therapist does not have to be perfect to be helpful. But “seems fine” is often not enough information either.

If you have ever picked a therapist from a directory, hoped for the best, and later realized the fit was off, this guide is for you.

1. What concerns do you most often work with?

This helps you understand whether your situation is familiar territory or occasional territory.

2. How would you describe your approach?

You are listening for clarity, not buzzwords. A good answer should sound understandable.

3. What do first sessions usually focus on?

This can tell you a lot about pacing and whether the process feels collaborative.

4. How do you think about fit?

A thoughtful therapist usually has a grounded answer here.

5. Is there anything about my situation that may be outside your usual work?

This question invites honesty. Honest limits are a good sign.

6. How do you handle culture, identity, family context, or lived experience in therapy?

For many people, fit includes not having to separate symptoms from context.

7. How will we know whether the work is helping?

You are not looking for a guarantee. You are looking for thoughtfulness.

8. What should I do if I am not sure after the first session?

A steady therapist can usually answer this without pressure.
